Marry, my child, early next Thursday morn,
The gallant, young and noble gentleman,
The County Paris, at Saint Peter's Church,
Shall happily make thee there a joyful bride.

JULIET

Now, by Saint Peter's Church and Peter too,
He shall not make me there a joyful bride

  3. Juliet doesnt want to marry Paris because she is already married to Romeo, but her parents dont know about it. Her mother thinks that Paris is a brilliant man for her daughter to marry as he can take care of her and is also wealthy enough to do so. She says that Paris will make her a joyful bride, meaning that he will be able to make her happy throughout their entire marriage. Juliet on the other hand feels that this will not be possible, because she has found her one true love- Romeo.

  4. This is the day after the ball and Juliet has agreed to marry Romeo. She's in love with Romeo and when Lady Capulet tells her about the arranged marriage, she can't reveal why she doesn't want to marry him but makes it obvious how angry she is about the situation. It is very strange to disobey your parents instructions so when this happens, a huge argument kicks of in the Capulet household and sets off a domino effect of events.

  5. "St Peter's Church" has bilbilical and religous connotations, with it being a name of a church.By Juliet stating ""St Peter's Church and Peter" it implies that she does not seek the approval of God-durig the 16th/17th Century religion was a key feature of many people's lives.Shakespeare has has used an oxymoron in the form of "joyful" when Juliet is speaking in order to connote her displeasure and disparency between her feelings for Romeo and that of Paris.

  6. Act 3 Scene 5.
Juliet has married Romeo and although he is banished does not wish to be with anyone else, after Juliet finds out she is to marry Paris she goes to Freya Laurence and plans to fake her own death so she can be with Romeo.
You will marry Paris, he is a suitable match, you will be happy with him marry him.

  7. Lady Capulet calls Juliet 'my child' yet she doesnt take on the resposiblity of having a daughter and she only wants to enjoy the perks of being a parent and doesnt want to do all the hard work of a parent yet she is now marrying Juliet off to a older man to take care of her.

  8. Juliet and her mother discuss her future. LC tells her to marry Paris on Thursday morning and then he will make her a happy wife. Juliet says she will go to the church for marriage but will not be happy at all, as she is intrested in Romeo and not Paris. I am unaware where this appears.

  9. Juliet makes her thoughts about the marriage to Paris apparent by stating 'Now, by Saint Peter's Church and Peter too,
He shall not make me there a joyful bride' This shows Juliet swearing that the marriage will not commence, by telling Lady Capulet that she will not become a bride. Juliet also swears by Saint Peter not be wed, almost appearing blasphemous, using a religious 'Saint' to emphasise her negative thoughts about marriage. She also uses the Saint as a religious witness; something to swear by to show her mother how little she wanted to marry Paris.

  11. In this passage it is clear that Lady Capulet likes Paris more than Juliet does. Lady Capulet describes Paris as "gallant, young and noble". The adjectives "galant" and "young" descibe Paris' physical appearance instead of other qualities which suggests to me that Lady Capulet likes what she see's. She seems very shallow and is only concerned with his appearance and possibly money which isn't mentioned here but Paris is a wealthy man. She is uninteresed in Juliets happiness but thinks that if she was in Juliets shoes she would be a "joyful bride".

Lady Capulet calls Juliet her 'child' yet she doesnt take on the resposiblity of having a daughter - which is normal of the time period. She only wants to enjoy the perks of being a parent and doesnt want to do all the hard work of a parent yet she is now marrying Juliet off to a older man to take care of her. She presents paris as a 'galliant' and 'noble' man this makes the situation seem more appealing to Juliet. peace out
